A Thrilling Draw: Inter Miami and Palmeiras Battle to a 2-2 Stalemate in FIFA Club World Cup Group Stage

Miami, USA – 24th June 2025 – The highly anticipated clash between Major League Soccer's darlings, Inter Miami, and Brazilian giants Palmeiras delivered on all its promises, culminating in a captivating 2-2 draw in the FIFA Club World Cup Group A. The result sees both sides progress to the Round of 16, but not without a dramatic late comeback from the South American champions.

Played at a vibrant Hard Rock Stadium, the match was a true testament to the growing global appeal of the Club World Cup, attracting a passionate crowd eager to witness the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez go head-to-head with Palmeiras' formidable squad.

Inter Miami, buoyed by their strong showing in the tournament so far, started brightly. The Herons found their rhythm early, and it wasn't long before they broke the deadlock. A superb assist from Luis Suárez in the 16th minute set up the young Argentine Tadeo Allende, who calmly slotted the ball home to give Miami a deserved lead.

The second half saw Inter Miami extend their advantage, with Suárez turning goal-scorer in the 65th minute. The Uruguayan maestro conjured a moment of individual brilliance, weaving past defenders before unleashing a powerful left-footed strike into the top corner, doubling Miami's lead and seemingly putting them in control.

However, Palmeiras, known for their resilience and never-say-die attitude, refused to buckle. The Brazilian side, despite being two goals down with just ten minutes remaining, mounted a sensational comeback. Substitutes Paulinho and Mauricio emerged as the heroes for Palmeiras, striking in the 80th and 88th minutes respectively to snatch a crucial point. Paulinho's goal, a well-taken finish from inside the box, ignited hope, while Mauricio's late equaliser from the edge of the area sent the travelling Palmeiras faithful into raptures.

The draw means both Inter Miami and Palmeiras finish Group A with five points. However, due to a superior goal difference, Palmeiras secured the top spot in the group. This sets up an intriguing Round of 16 encounter for Inter Miami, who will now face the formidable UEFA Champions League winners, Paris Saint-Germain, on Sunday, 29th June, in Atlanta. Palmeiras, on the other hand, will face fellow Brazilian side Botafogo in what promises to be a thrilling all-South American affair.

Speaking after the match, Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano expressed mixed emotions. While pleased with his team's qualification, he admitted disappointment at letting a two-goal lead slip. "We are disappointed because we had the game in our hands. We couldn't close the game," Mascherano told FIFA. "But it was going to be difficult because [we were facing] a team that play very well with a lot of quality and is one of the best teams in South1 America."

The draw serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of football at the highest level and the quality present in this expanded FIFA Club World Cup. As the tournament progresses, the stakes will only get higher, and with Inter Miami now set to face Lionel Messi's former club, Paris Saint-Germain, the excitement is only just beginning. Football fans across the globe are eagerly anticipating what promises to be a memorable knockout stage.
